Juliana Alonso-Olarte
Juliana Alonso-Olarte’s art emerges from the overlapping sounds, colors and images of a far-away home, not so distant memories and the life that blooms around her every day. In the space created by nostalgia, memories and images from the past emerge to to be expressed on paper (or canvas or screen.) Juliana brings into sharp focus the overlapping layers of past and present, near and far, real and imaginary, zooming in on the fine details of memory and daily life.
Born in Bogotá, it was her natural impulse to create that led Juliana from doodling on the walls of her parents’ house and in her father’s books to a career in design. She completed her B.A. in Industrial Design and Photography at the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, and presented work for social activism campaigns in museums and youth art shows. She furthered her education by completing an Interactive Media Degree through Art Institute. Recognizing passion and emotion in the physical form, from bodies to buildings, it is through visual art that Juliana expresses her response to life. Driven by the desire and a natural ability to translate ideas into compelling visual representations, she has found success in areas as varied as website redesign for the oil and gas industry and creating logos and cd covers for a Colombian pop-rock band.
Ever-ready for new challenges and tools for her toolbox, Juliana works in a variety of mediums, from painting and drawing to photography and digital media. Life has given her the opportunity to get back to her expressive roots, bringing together the child-like playfulness of creative expression and the strong technical design skills she has honed over the years. Propelled by the endless inspiration drawn from her Colombian culture, loving family, chocolate, music, Capoeira and friends, Juliana continues to grow as an artist and designer each day.
